What is PrEP?
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a once daily pill designed for individuals at risk of exposure to HIV. It works by preventing the HIV virus from establishing a permanent infection if a person is exposed to it. When taken as prescribed PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV infection by greater than 90%.
Visit the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website for more information:
Who Should Take PrEP?
PrEP is recommended for people who are at high risk of contracting HIV. This may include:
Those who engage in unprotected sex with multiple or unknown partners.
Individuals with HIV-positive partners
People who inject drugs and share needles or equipment.
Those who have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) recently.
What to Expect:
Initial Consultation - When you first start PrEP, your healthcare provider will do a comprehensive evaluation, which typically includes a: risk assessment, HIV test, STI screening, and comprehensive blood work.
Starting PrEP - Once you're cleared to begin PrEP, your provider will discuss your lab results with you and give you a prescription for PrEP.
Understanding the importance of adherence: It's essential to take PrEP daily to maintain its effectiveness. Missing doses can significantly reduce its effectiveness.
Follow-Up Visits - After starting PrEP, you will need to return to your healthcare provider regularly to monitor your health. These visits generally occur every 3 months.
